This series, curated by Janice Findley, Seattle filmmaker and film historian, features four films being presented on the last Sunday of Feb, Mar, April, and May highlighting one of Hollywood’s great leading ladies from the 1930’s and 40’s.

Sunday, February 25, 3:00 P.M. Ninotchka (1939) Starring Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas, screenplay by Billy Wilder & Charles Brackett. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch: Garbo begins the movie as a Russian official in a proletariat suit —but is won over by a crazy, wonderful hat on display —she buys the hat and falls in love with Douglas —wearing a diaphanous gown

Sunday, March 25, 3:00 P.M. His Girl Friday (1940) Starring Rosalind Russell, Cary Grant – Screenplay by Charles Lederer & Ben Hecht (based on the play “The Front Page” by Hecht & Charles MacArthur). Directed by Howard Hawks.

Sunday, April 29, 3:00 P.M. The Lady Eve (1941) Starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, written and directed by Preston Sturges. Costumes by the great Edith Head. Here is a link to Edith Head’s costumes and sketches for Stanwyck. The Stanwyck character pretends to be a second character, THE LADY EVE, to give the Henry Fonda character his comeuppance.

Sunday, May 27, 3:00 P.M. The Palm Beach Story (1942) Starring Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea, written & directed by Preston Sturges. Costumes by Irene. The last image portrays Colbert’s character when she loses her clothes on the train and creates an outfit out of a man’s PJs and a towel. Colbert’s character leaves the husband she loves, McCrea, for both of their financial futures. He follows her and comedy ensues!
